masterless

What it is

This is our main project — a tabletop RPG that replaces the human game master with an AI. It generates the story, knows the mechanics, rolls the dice, runs combat on a tactical map, and responds dynamically to whatever your party comes up with. No prep, no memorizing rulebooks: you just play, and the world responds.

Play solo, exploring the world at your own pace, or open a lobby and bring friends — the AI adapts to any party composition.

What it runs on

masterless runs on the Google AI stack — Gemini models via Vertex AI. Under the hood it's not a single prompt but a full LLM pipeline: an orchestrator-planner, an army of cheap implementors, verifiers, and tools for declaratively mutating the world state. The project started in 2025 and has been in active development ever since: the engine, the frontend (web and Android), the backend, and the pipeline itself are written and rewritten as we go.

What it does

• AI game master. Runs the scene, tracks story threads and world state, resolves every action with a roll.
• Solo and co-op. Alone or with friends in a shared lobby.
• Open rules. Familiar mechanics built on the OGL — content from SRD 5.1 and 5.2.
• Your own books. Ready-made adventures from the library, upload PDFs with your favorite rules and homebrew — or generate an adventure from your own idea, crafted to the canons of the best modules.
• Maps and environment. The tactical battlefield is generated on the fly — you see the disposition instead of imagining it.
• Immersive audio. The music shifts automatically to match the mood of the scene and the level of action.

Where it stands

masterless is in early access. Some things are slow, some things break, a lot is changing — that's the normal phase for a project this size. You can jump in and play right now.
